Welcome to The Old Northeast

A behind-the-scenes look at what to do in St. Petersburg’s oldest neighborhood.

Distinguished as the oldest neighborhood in St. Petersburg, The Old Northeast was once made up of farmers’ homesteads and citrus groves. Today, the area has blossomed into a leafy residential haven with brick streets, waterfront vistas, and green spaces. Located near Downtown St. Petersburg, the neighborhood features over 3,000 historic buildings and a shopping plaza with restaurants, shops, and additional historic landmarks.

The median age of residents is 48 years old, and the area is a popular place for working professionals and families with young kids. Around 53% of residents live in owner-occupied units, while the rest live in rentals. Made up of historic mansions, Mediterranean homes, bungalows, and waterfront residences, the area has a little something for everyone. Jacarandas, magnolias, and palms give the neighborhood a tropical, beautiful look. Spend an afternoon soaking up the sunshine near the water, and it will be easy to see why this historic enclave continues to delight and surprise even decades after it was originally founded.

Dining, Entertainment, & Shopping

If you’re in the mood for tacos, you’ve come to the right place. Several authentic taco joints line 4th Street, from Casita Taqueria to Tijuana Flats. For some of the best bar food around, head to the Old Northeast Tavern, where you can order everything from pork sliders and smoked salmon sandwiches to wild mushroom pizza and chicken and plantain quesadillas. Wash it all down with a specialty beer or a glass of wine. The Old Northeast Tavern also features live entertainment and music throughout the week, and they even host private parties.

On a Saturday morning, there’s no better place to be than The Black Crow. Here, you can try various artisan craft coffees and lattes, and the beans are all roasted in-house by the owner, Greg. Make sure to pick up some baked goods to sample alongside the coffee.

Things to Do

Because of its beautiful white-sand beaches, the Old Northeast has long been favored by people who love living by and visiting the water. If you’d like to spend a day on (or by) the water, you can’t go wrong by heading to North Shore Park. Palm trees line the sugary strip of sand, making it the perfect beach getaway. Pack a picnic lunch to enjoy on one of the verdant patches of grass, or bring a volleyball so you can play a game on the courts. Kids are sure to love playing on the waterfront playground equipment. There’s even a dog park, so you can bring your furry friends.

Ringed by banyan trees, Crescent Lake Park is a favorite among locals because of its lakefront walking trails and dog park. There are also designated tennis courts, playgrounds, and baseball fields. Known for its manatee population, Coffee Pot Bay is another great location for those who love the outdoors. Be sure to bring a camera and take some pictures of the friendly manatees as they lounge in the sun.

Created in the early 1900s, the Sunken Gardens is a picturesque paradise filled with more than 50,000 of the oldest tropical plants in the region. Spend an afternoon exploring the tropical oasis, which includes flowers, flamingos, gardens, and waterfalls. The nearby Great Explorations Children’s Museum is a great place for a family outing with an arsenal of kid-friendly exhibits and activities. For the last 30 years, the museum has fostered creativity and play among young kids in the area. (Bonus points: You can even host your child’s next birthday party or special event here!)
